Drug & Alcohol problems

In today’s world there is constant pressure to do more in less time. Many find they can cope better with a little ‘help’. Others may look to substances to help them cope with loneliness, sadness or anxiety. Others may use them to have fun, as part of socialising.

The point is people use drugs and alcohol because they feel they get something ‘positive’ out of it and not because they are somehow unaware of the potential health risks. Taking a moral stance or just telling someone the risks is unlikely to bring change. A person’s motives need to be understood and the psychological process should be aimed at replacing drug and alcohol use with healthy behaviours that address these motives. Specialist psychiatric input is also needed to monitor the prescription of substitute medications.
